Atlanta, March 21 2013 – The suits at the Library of Congress announced the 2013 additions to the National Recording Registry. Today, CBS News published a helpful slide show detailing the eclectic list of recordings and artists, including The Bee Gees, Pink Floyd, Chubby Checker, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Will Rogers, Simon and Garfunkel and many other notable jazz, classical and pop musicians.
Notably missing from the full list is any musical homage to the fine art of poker. The closest anything comes is maybe “At Folsom Prison” by Johnny Cash or “We’re Only In It For the Money” by Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, but that would be a stretch – even for Frank. “Money” by Pink Floyd gets close and is technically on the list, but no cigar (not even for Pink). There are many fine songs about the games people play, including the obvious:
- Kenny Rogers “The Gambler”
- Elvis Presley “Viva Las Vegas”
- Ray Charles “Blackjack”
- Frank Sinatra “Luck Be a Lady”
What is your favorite poker or gambling song? Why should it be enshrined with Atlanta Poker News or the National Recording Registry list?
If you secretly rock out to Spandau Ballet, let your freak flag fly brothers and sisters (quietly in the corner).
